Do I Have to Get X-Rays During Every Dentist Visit?

A healthy patient, with a good oral health history, probably doesn’t need X-Rays at every clinic visit. However, in certain situations, the dentist may determine that more frequent X-Rays are necessary and required. Overall, dental X-Rays deliver little radiation, but where there is concern, a frank discussion may be appropriate. The fact is, dental X-Rays are an essential tool for accurate diagnosis. In many cases, a good set of images can identify small problems before they progress.

At the Mackenzie Dental Centre, digital dental X-Rays are used as an alternative to traditional X-Rays. With digital X-Rays, there is much-reduced radiation. As well, they are more comfortable for the patient, and with faster turnaround time for viewing (there is no need to process). For the dentist, digital images allow for enlargement and zooming on specific areas of the mouth – it’s an effective way to isolate and diagnose potential problems before they develop into big problems.

Why Do Dentists in Woodbridge Use Dental X-Rays?

With precision and clarity, digital X-Rays provide an indispensible diagnostic tool for the dentist.

  • To find decay and irregularities between the teeth
  • To monitor periodontal conditions below the gum
  • To view the jaw bone and general position of teeth
  • To detect growths or abnormalities in the mouth

Although digital X-Rays do produce lower levels of radiation, the team at the Mackenzie Dental Centre takes every precaution to limit a patient's exposure – a lead apron is used to shield and protect the body, and X-Rays are only prescribed when necessary.

Probably the most important feature of digital X-Rays is the ability to view portions of the teeth that are hidden below the gum line. Beyond viewing the enamel, dentin, and pulp, these X-Rays are also able to clearly view the jawbone and joints – all critical to overall oral health. At the Mackenzie Dental Centre, our dentist in Woodbridge, serving the entire Vaughan community.
