Why Should I Do Teeth Whitening at the Dentist?

Today, teeth whitening treatments are common. For both men and women, whitening agents are safe and effective, and deliver excellent results. At the same time, patients have high demands and high expectations. But the fact is, natural teeth aren’t supposed to be “super white”.

No teeth whitening procedure, whether in a home kit or at the dentist, will make teeth white like snow. And while every drug store offers a myriad of whitening kits, the Mackenzie Dental Centre recommends a professional approach – it’s the best way to ensure results under supervision.

Realistically, every patient will derive different results. Patients with yellowish teeth could derive several shades of white better. Patients who smoke will have different results. However, even with the most advanced whitening treatment, results are going to vary from patient to patient.

Patients have discoloured teeth for many reasons. That’s why professional teeth whitening would be a preferred option to the DIY option. Discoloured teeth could be a matter of age; or a matter of diet; or even a matter of family genetics. Whatever the reason, proper diagnosis is essential.

Bottom line, whiter teeth are typically a cosmetic procedure for most. But doing the procedure under the supervision of an experienced dentist has benefits. A dentist can diagnose underlying causes for discoloration – it means that treatment is more comprehensive than just whitening.

With teeth whitening procedures, patients should be acquainted with the pros and cons. At the Mackenzie Dental Centre, the dental care team explains the treatment protocol, and reinforces realistic expectations for each patient, without promising outcomes that are unattainable.

While it’s true that over-the-counter teeth whitening might be a cost saving, it’s always better to do it right the first time – and that means having an experienced dentist handle the procedure. What Are the Early Symptoms of Gum Disease?

Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) can range from simple inflammation of the gums to more serious damage of tissue and bone that surrounds the teeth. Unfortunately, in a worst-case scenario, teeth can be lost. The good news is that gum disease can be arrested or slowed down with proper personal care and with professional care from a dentist in Woodbridge, where it’s required.

What Causes Gum Disease?

The fact is, every mouth is full of bacteria. The bacteria, along with other particles and debris, will form “plaque” on the surface of the teeth. And while brushing and flossing might remove surface plaque, there are numerous deposits that only professional cleaning can remove. Hence, regular visits to the dentist, and regular professional teeth cleaning are the first steps in preventing gum issues.

When unattended, bacteria will cause inflammation of the gums – this is what the dentist calls Gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild case of gum disease - the gums are red, sometimes swollen, and bleed easily. Here again, good personal maintenance and regular cleaning by a dentist can keep things under control. This type of gum disease does not present with tissue or bone symptoms.

When gingivitis is not properly treated (or diagnosed at an early stage) things can advance to a condition called Periodontitis. Clearly, this condition has already advanced beyond the gingivitis, with bone and tissue beginning to break down. Without proper treatment, the bone, gum, and tissue cannot properly support the teeth. This is where teeth become loose and require removal.

The Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Usually, symptoms of gum disease don’t present until the ages of 30 or 40. Men are more likely than women to have symptoms, but for everyone, consistent oral health care is key. As well, regular dental exams are the ideal way to monitor the signs and symptoms of gum disease.

  • Persistently bad breath
  • Red/swollen gum tissue
  • Tender/bleeding gums
  • Pain during chewing
  • Loose or sensitive teeth
  • Visible receding gums

What Should I Do About My Fear of the Dentist?

Many people fear the dentist. Unfortunately, there’s also a tendency to avoid the dentist because of that fear.  There are also people who get anxious about going to the dentist, and will therefore go only when absolutely necessary. For some, fear is based on a previous bad experience at the dentist's office. For others, fear stems from the anticipation of pain.

Whatever the cause, many dentists are already providing a non-threatening clinic environment. Whether it’s a comfortable and relaxing waiting room, or special treatment protocols, today’s modern dental office is designed to embrace the fearful patient. At the Mackenzie Dental Centre, this is true for both adults and children – and it makes a big difference.

The truth is, visiting a dentist in Woodbridge is not really as painful as patients might expect. In fact, surveys have shown that many patients anticipate more pain or discomfort than they actually experience after a procedure. The good news is that many clinics now offer a number of options for sedation during a procedure - it’s an effective way to diminish patient anxiety.

Sedation and Dental Anxiety

At the Mackenzie Dental Centre, Moderate Sedation is offered to patients who may benefit from a less stressful treatment or procedure. Also known as Conscious Sedation, it allows a patient to be more relaxed, yet conscious and awake. Dr. Lloyd Pedvis is professionally licensed to administer Moderate Sedation, while the clinic team monitors the patient’s blood pressure and heart rate.

Depending on the particular procedure, Dr. Pedvis decides on administering Minimal Sedation or Moderate Sedation, both of which allow a patient to have a comfortable, stress-free experience. For patients with fear or anxiety associated with the dentist’s office, the Mackenzie Dental Centre may well be the best option. After all, the results far outweigh the avoidance of a visit.

What Can I Do to Change the Shape of My Teeth?

There are many factors that determine the appearance of teeth. To begin with, genetics will decide if teeth are large or small, rounded or squared. In fact, genetics also decides on the positioning and spacing of teeth. For dentists, a common cosmetic concern with many patients is the wish to change the shape and/or size of their teeth.

Patients may be dissatisfied with the aesthetic look of their teeth for a variety of reasons. And while shape and size are a common concern, there may be other issues as well. At the Mackenzie Dental Centre, Dr. Lloyd Pedvis offers a number of different cosmetic procedures, each designed to meet the specific personal needs of the patient.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is easy, inexpensive, and with excellent cosmetic results. Bonding is often used when a tooth is chipped, damaged, or discolored. Bonding also smooths out any rough edges.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is simply a tooth-shaped "cap" that is fixed into place over a damaged tooth. Dental crowns serve to repair a natural tooth, and restore shape, contour, and appearance.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin “shells” made of porcelain or composite materials. They fit perfectly over a tooth, and are used in a variety of applications to improve the aesthetic look of the teeth.

Contouring

Contouring can remove small amounts of existing tooth enamel, with the intention of changing a tooth's shape, length, or surface features. For some, this may be the most viable answer.

The Mackenzie Dental Centre offers a wide variety of cosmetic dental procedures in a comfortable and relaxing clinic environment. Dr. Pedvis and the team are highly skilled professionals, using state-of-the-art equipment, and the latest treatment protocols. Patients can rest assured that they are receiving the best in dental health care.
