Before you book your appointment with a root canal dentist in Woodbridge at Mackenzie Dental Centre, we would like to share some information about root canal treatment and its after-care guide with you.

How Does a Root Canal Woork

Root canal treatment replaces infected and damaged pulp tissue with a filling, which allows the tooth to be restored and safeguarded. The treatment begins with a thorough examination of the tooth and surrounding areas.

The tooth can then be treated with one of two methods: our preferred method is called the open-apex technique, which involves removing diseased pulp tissue and shaping the chamber around the roots of the tooth to ensure that no bacteria remains.

Why Is Root Canal Necessary

Root canal treatments are an important part of dentistry. They can help to save teeth that would otherwise require a costly dental implant or a tooth loss. Just how long a tooth should be left after a root canal treatment can be a question many people have. The good news is that the recommended time period is relatively short, and it is important to start this time period as soon as possible after treatment.

Tooth healing time after a root canal treatment, there is a lot of bleeding from the pulp chamber and root canals. This blood often contains bacteria that can cause an infection. In order to avoid this, the dentist will often cover the tooth with a temporary filling. If the pulp has been completely removed from the tooth, a permanent filling may also be used instead.

Root Canal Post Treatment Care

After you have received your root canal treatment from a root canal dentist in Vaughan, you need to follow certain instructions to avoid infection.

The next few days after the treatment is one of the most important times in your dental recovery. It is important that you remember to:

  1. Avoid eating anything until the numbness in your mouth wears off. Although most procedures are successful, eating too soon after the root canal treatment can cause increased sensitivity in your tooth, called dry socket or alveolar osteitis which can be quite painful.
  2. Brush your teeth 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks following one of our root canal procedures. Use a soft brush with circular motion at a 45-degree angle against the gums. You can also use mouthwash or mouth rinse to help with infection protection.
  3. Floss daily to help avoid plaque and bacteria build-up in between teeth.
  4. Avoid biting into food hard until the area is fully healed, which normally takes about 2 weeks or more after the root canal procedure is performed by our dentist.
