Is Laser Dentistry Painful?

Laser dentistry procedures are virtually painless! Lasers can be used to replace a variety of dental tools that can cause some discomfort and pain for patients. Drills, needles, and scalpels can all be replaced by laser dentistry.

This can provide increased comfort for patients, especially children and those who suffer from dental anxiety. When treated with lasers, you won’t have to deal with the traumatic sounds or sensations that traditional drills and tools impose. Not to mention the pain.

What are Lasers Used For?

  • Cavity Decay Removal: Instead of using local anesthetic and a dental drill, lasers can be used to remove tooth decay when treating a cavity.
  • Cleaning of Bacteria: Lasers can clean out bacteria and diseased tissue from periodontal pockets, promoting better healing and reducing the risk of further infection.
  • Frenectomy: Lasers can be used to remove or alter the frenum, which is the tissue that connects your tongue to the floor of your mouth. Traditionally, this procedure is performed on children using medical scissors. Lasers provide a pain-free alternative.
  • Oral Lesions: Lasers can be used to remove any oral lesions or growths in the mouth. Often, these types of procedures require some type of anesthetic.
  • Gum Shaping: Gum disease can be treated with dental lasers. These lasers can be used to reshape the gums and remove excess or damaged gum tissue.
